As analysed in previous posts , Ellen's greatest aspirations in Robert Eggers adaptation of " Nosferatu " are love, freedom and to be understood. She ends the " I Know Him " scene declaring herself " unclean " , while asking Thomas to keep away from her, and she must go to Count Orlok . She says he will kill Thomas if she doesn't, for him to allow it: " we will be torn apart and all will be despair ". She's not wholly certain of her choice (evocative of 1922 Ellen just before she summons Count Orlok, to sacrifice herself to him), but she has come to the conclusion her nature won't ever be accepted by "the living", and death (Count Orlok) is her way out .
